6/14/94 Civic Center, Des Moines, IA There are very bassy soundboards
of the second set in distribution.. with a little
equalization they sound pretty good, but there's still some hiss. Opening
standard. Very pleasant pre-Nirvana segment, along the
same lines as 6/11/94 and numerous other YEMs. No unduly melodious
themes, but there is still some hauntingly beautiful &
spacey material in here. Nirvana at 4:01. Typically pleasing.. Mike's
solo section is at 4:45, and he's much more somber than he
was in the 6/11/94 version, but he's still reasonably active. Nothing
that perky, though, until the end. The pre-charge segment is
fine, and the first shot at the Note around 6:08 is well-jammed. The
second Note is well-sustained by Trey beginning at 6:55,
but the jamming before and after it is uneventful. "Boy" at 7:29 after
an AWESOME, HIGHLY AMUSING scream from Trey
(sounded like he got some serious phlegm in there!). Decent BMGS/WUDMTF
segment.. tramps segment isn't nearly as active
as 6/11/94. Signals from Mike, but Page isn't too active. They get
into this interesting stop/start groove of sorts in the tramps
segment, but the segment is otherwise profoundly uneventful, with very
little activity from all parties.. well, Fish starts getting
down around 11 minutes or so.. DAMN!!! Bad cut into the jam segment
(probably lost a good twenty seconds there). Trey is
delightfully noodling on the "On Broadway" theme, with very sweet accompaniment
from Page on piano.. some Mike, too. Very
nice jam in here (around 12:30, compensating for the cut). Trey is
deliciously noodling. Trey appears to tease another tune,
though, around 13 minutes or so, but I can't name this. Yargh! Nice
groove to bring back an absolutely SMOOOOKIN' YEM
jam, though!! =^] Just an awesome, soaring, spectacular jam around
14 minutes or thereabouts. Just absolutely kickass YEM
jamming, that makes a version like 12/31/93 sound like an absolute
waste of time by comparison (swiiiipe..). Honestly, the
jamming to CONCLUDE this YEM jam segment is better than the 6/11/94
YEM!!! B&D around 15 minutes, with Mike
teasing and playing with the "On Broadway" theme quite well. He just
funks around it rather nicely, with modest accompaniment
from Fish.. A very melodious effort from Mike (an almost Music Never
Stopped tease in here.. almost..) Closing segment
around 16 minutes. Vocal jamming starts immediately after the WUDMTF
lyrics, as usual. The vocal jam starts out quietly..
includes lots of breathy-noises, too. Some "Uh" and "Ah" noises, too.
(great.. tell us more.. ;-) Yawn.. Around 17:30 or so
(compensating for the cut.. all my times are now compensating roughly),
the vocal jam starts sounding vaguely akin to "On
Broadway" and there's a circus-signal from Trey (you know, the very
very beginning of Esther). Typically crazy vocal jamming
around 19 minutes. Lots of odd vocal sounds.. but they are beginning
to harmonize, and do. Still, a pretty damn dull vocal jam,
imo. Trey starts lightly playing the cymbals around 20 minutes.. Mike
(it sounds like) starts groaning a bit.. bass drum.. start
vocal jamming the HYHU theme. Cute segue into the HYHU theme, fwiw.
Total time roughly 20 minutes. "I hate this song, I
hate this song, you know I hate this song." (as sung by Fish to the
HYHU theme) "I just hate the way they abuse me with it."
This version gets an A- for the jam segment alone, even though my copy
cuts. The jam segment is really, really awesome, imo.
This version doesn't get an A since the other segments really weren't
that impressive for the most part, imo (I like the B&D
segment, though). two cents charlie
