Well, everyone basically has this show (or should
have it). The Cornell University 5/8/77 of Phish
shows, in a widely-distributed use of 5/8/77 (not
music quality), this show is very niiiice, and
includes some of my favorite versions of tunes,
thanks primarily to GCH (Contact is f*cking
hysterical with Gears' playin, not to mention the
Gumbo, Suzy, AC/DC Bag, etc.). There are lots of
crispy DSBDs of this show available (the mix isn't as
sweet as it could be, though). The Tweezer at this
show, unfortunately, leaves a lot to be desired in my
opinion. At ten minutes, it is standard length. The
horns certainly add a grand dimension to this tune,
but not so much so that I think it -- in general --
sounds better than it does without horns. Tweezer
just doesn't need horns to be really good, unlike
Frankenstein (this song was written for horns).
Anyway, the Tweezer jam segment of this version is
solid (with no help from the horns), but the jam as a
whole left me feeling kinda empty. I love the
beginning of this jam (a monotonous dark groove), but
it gets progressively more "Ok.. whatever" as it goes
on. Just isn't as good as 5/3/91 or 7/26/91 (w/GCH).
I'd have to give it a 5.1 (just barely above average,
because of the horns, but like I said, I dont think
this tune needs the horns..). At nearly 3 minutes,
the Tweezer Reprise is standard length, and frankly,
just incredible with the horns.. unlike Tweezer, I
think the Reprise is magnificently assisted by the
horns.. this Tweezer Reprise has to be up there,
rating wise.. too bad the Tweezer doesn't complement
it, in my opinion.. Feel free to disagree.. (C+)
