6/17/95 Nissan Pavilion, Gainesville, VA (Rvwd 6/95) Opening is straightforward.
Heartbreaker tease somewhat early in
the jam segment. Jam is very RAW and in your face. No fancy stuff in
the opening few mins of the jam. The segue into Johnny
B. Goode is smooth but strong (at around 7 mins), and DAMN does the
JBG smoke! It is much, MUCH better than any recent
Dead version, in that it contains a lot of fierce energy and power
(which the Dead are not known for nowadays). The entire
song is played, and played very well. The segue back into Tweezer is
also smooth and good, at around 9:40 or so. Really slaky
groove from Moses, and everyone is truly grooving on this version.
The rhythm at this point is similar to the MONTANA ALO
portion of the Bozeman Tweezer from last Fall [Note: see also 10/22/95!].
At around 11:40 or so, Trey steps back into the
tune (after having briefly been silent), and plays a groovy little
lick that is one of my favorite Tweezer Moments for certain. I
wish he had jammed more at this point, since this lick lasted only
2 seconds or so. Anyway, around 15 minutes, this
groovy/dancin' version gets faiiirrly spacey, but not in a Bangoresque
way (Fish is still fairly active, along with Page). At just
after 16 mins, the jam comes pounding back with a vengeance, and after
a min or so, the jam takes on an exceedingly groovy
fast-paced fusion feel with Trey soloing over everyone majestically.
A somewhat thrilling, though typically DARK, Tweezer jam
at this point. At 18 and a half, the jam gets into a spell-binding,
mind-expanding mode that surely took some phirgins in the
audience (like my brother, Matt) for strong. Just a sick jam, until
the typical theme ending comes in around 19 mins or so. A
little vocal jamming (nothing spectacular) closes this version at around
20:35 or thereabouts, and then MCGRUPPS, which was
the highlight of this above avg. show for me. An excellent version
of Tweezer. 7.5 (A)
