I just received this from Mr. Rioux. Thanks, Joe!
This was the first *live* Tweezer (it was
soundchecked at the Wetlands in early March '90,
tho). There is apparently an earlier version from a
soundcheck in 2/90, though. The very opening bit
drags on a little longer, shakily, but it is
otherwise Tweezer. The opening lyrics segment is as
they all were back then -- FUN! Some great
"Caaaaa-olds" from Mike... but there is no serious
jam before the Ebeneezer lyric, as there is nowadays
(well, often nowadays).
The jam segment does begin roughly after the
Ebeneezer lyric, though, as it still does. The
segment starts around 4:30, typical of the older
versions. Well, the first few minutes of the jam
segment aren't bad, but they aren't at all
interesting especially, either. Mike is prominent in
the mix, and everyone is tooling around in typical
funky fashion, but these opening minutes reveal no
real theme or intent. There is simply nothing
melodically meritorious, in my opinion. Around 7:15
or so, Trey appears to get into a sustaining groove,
but he soon goes off-key with it and it doesn't sound
to hot. At 8:07 the dying out of the Tweezer jam
segment begins. Like all of the original versions,
after this dying out jam, the original Tweezer theme
comes pounding back at like 8:55, and there's one
last touch on the theme and then... boom boom! It
ends at 9:34. Trey says the name of "that song" was
"Tweezer so cold." ;) Rating is 3.5 (D)... this is
amusing to listen to, in light of how Tweezer has
evolved over the years, otherwise, you will probably
not be amused. I think the PON version is far
superior to this, and I imagine that the band does,
too. ;^) The Yamar at this show is great, though, with
some fun Bonanza teases from Trey at one point!
