Well, given the previous MikeSs reviewed recently
perhaps you thought this wave of Great Ones would
continue. If you did, you thought WRONG. This
version is a return to reality. One of the sickest
versions of Possum I've ever heard at this show,
though. Trey sounds like Jimmy Page in it. Some of
the best wailing I've heard him do. Anyway, this
MikeS was disappointing. It is very
straightforward, with Trey doing lots of off-key,
eerie sounding sustain, but without great fills.
Everyone keeps the groove, but it isn't ear-catching
at all, in my opinion. I mean, it isn't even in the
same league as 4/21/92 or 3/20/92 or 4/19/92.
Hydrogen is somewhat cut on my copy. What there is
sounds typical.
Trey comes in a bar too soon for the Weekapaug jam,
cutting briefly into Mike's opening solo. DOH! Trey
dropped back out quickly, but it seemed like a little
slip up (it could have been intentional, of course).
Mike's opening is snappy and tight, as usual;
nothing outrageous occurs. The Weekapaug jam is
excellent, as it usually is, with everyone hitting
all the right notes. Trey makes a very fierce effort
to redeem this version of MikesGroove. There's a
tease of something I should probably know, in the
first few minutes of the jam segment, but I can't
name it or even guess it. It ain't Phish or Dead.
Maybe it is original, I don't know. The ending of
this Weekapaug is by far the most uninspiring one
I've heard, with Trey -- just before the very end --
welcoming Henrietta to the front of the stage.
That's right, he welcomes Henrietta to the front of
the stage before he'd left the kit and before the
'Groove had "ended." I think this demonstrated how
Trey felt about this Weekapaug, and, well, I agree
with him. 4.5 rating, even though the Weekapaug
itself is very strong (C-). 15 minutes total time
(approximately.. I'm making an educated guess here,
folks.. my Hydrogen is cut). Again, even though the
Weekapaug is certainly above average, and really does
contain impressive jamming on all fronts, it doesn't
redeem the overall feel of this groove, in my
opinion, hence, the below average rating.
two cents charlie
