Hey There
Coming down to the end of the first round of Ghosts from Summer 97 (Europe
and US) and licking my chops for those from the fall. The first
Ghost of
the fall was played last night in Denver in a first set that would
likely
have made me soil my fatty cords. I know I don't have to say
it but I
will.....I would like to get as many Ghost sets as I can....the only
one I
don't yet have from the summer is 7/3. If anyone can hook me
up with a
copy
of 7/3 that DOES NOT have the Ghost cut onto two tapes please e-mail
me.
The same goes for any and all Fall Ghost sets (I'm assuming last night
was
the first of 8 or so). With that said lets get to it. Thanks to Mark
Regopolous for this set.

The Ghost of the Talking Iron Butterfly Head
Coming on the heels of a multi duet jammed out Ya Mar with Magilla
reprise/tease at the end, this Ghost comes out of a fishman? yell and
a Ya
Mar-like sort intro reprise jam. The first licks of Ghost come
about 6 or
7
seconds after the yell and the intro to Ghost is a little longer than
is
standard with the lyrical portion of the prologue starting around 16
seconds
in. This is the most interesting prologue I have heard so far.
It doesn't
stick to the standard Ghost funkiness it is a lot smoother and has
a
relaxed
swing type feel to the funk. Mike is in boogie down all over
the damn
place
mode with Fish giving off some bossanova jazzy feel to me. the vocals
are
spirited and buoyant. The prologue gives the feel of a Ghost
that can soar
and fly with the best of them despite being composed of Heaaaaavy Metal.
The
verse break is again dominated by page, its extended (typical of the
European Ghosts) and funky in a honky-tonk sort of way. The prologue
comes
to a close with the last flutterby of GHOST! at or around the 3:00
minute
mark as has been the standard so far.
The Ghost story is fat and rocking hard immediately most of the other
Ghosts
start out with a jaunty funk, this one is grinding hard from the get
go.
This lets up around the 3:25 mark and drops into classic Ghost funk..
This
funk last for 40 seconds or so before the whole thing just mellows
out. The
whole thing takes on a delicate yet disarticulating jazzy feel.
Almost
like
a caterpillar slowly busting out of its cocoon. A feeler sticks through
here
a leg there, a flutter of a wing as it breaks free. This metamorphosis
is
similar in its lack of structure to Surrender to the air but nowhere
near
as
cacophonous or dissonant. Around 7:30 This metamorphosis is complete.
Trey
takes the lead and by 8:30 is in a full blown classic rock walk away
style
groove that becomes Take Me To the River. The setlist reads as a Ghost>Take
me to the River but it isn't how I would choose to do it. By 12:30
this
take
me to the river jam slides back into something very Ghost like. This
Ghost
is the Ghost of Iron Butterflies Innagadadavida around 13:50 this Metallic
Butterfly gives way to the classic 70's show theme song groove (like
the
close of 7/23 Ghost) typical of several other Ghosts. At 15:10 the
Olaphian
mothership slowly descends towards the talking iron butterfly head.
There
are a few moments of classic Dead Space at around 15:50 as the butterfly
is
beamed aboard the mothership. At 16:40 the talking butterfly
head tells
the
Olaphians where he wants to go. A take me to the River vocal reprise
which
lasts for two minutes or so. Around 19:25 Olaphian commander Herr Necklace
can be heard echoing the buttefly's directions....take me to the river!!!
All of this over an absolutely raging TMTTR jam. By 20:20 This Story
of the
Ghost is Over.
